Farah Khan Agreed to Act in Toaster Because of Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa, Reveals Director Vivek Daschaudary | Exclusive

-second ads to a 126-minute black comedy thriller is, frankly, one of the more interesting debut stories in recent Indian cinema. And the fact that he leaned into friendship over formality — with producers who trusted him enough to let him be “brutally honest” — gave Toaster a lightness and authenticity that commercial productions often lack.

What Is the Patralekhaa–Rajkummar Rao Production Journey Behind Toaster?

Toaster marks Patralekhaa’s debut as a film producer, under the banner KAMPA Films, co-owned with Rajkummar Rao. This is a significant personal milestone for the actress, who has spoken openly about wanting to step into production as an extension of her storytelling instincts.

In an interview with Hindustan Times in February 2025, Patralekhaa said: “Stepping into production is an organic extension of my love for storytelling. I wanted to create a space where inspiring stories could thrive.” She also noted that as an actor, the focus is on performance alone — but as a producer, you become responsible for everything from script development to execution.

Notably, Patralekhaa chose not to act in the project in order to focus on understanding the filmmaking process from the production side and to gain experience behind the camera — a decision that speaks to her sincerity about the producing role. Her brief on-screen cameo was therefore a bonus, not a plan.

The project was announced on 22 May 2024, with Sonakshi Sinha initially attached to play the female lead before being replaced by Sanya Malhotra ahead of filming in the latter half of 2024.

How Did the Critics Rate Toaster on Netflix?

The critical response has been largely warm, with a few reservations about the second half — which seems to be the one consistent note across reviews.

Devesh Sharma of Filmfare gave it 4 out of 5 stars, calling it a confident debut for both Daschaudary and the producing duo, praising it as a comedy that pokes good-natured fun at miserly people without ever hitting below the belt.

Bollywood Hungama rated it 3 out of 5, acknowledging that it is a quirky entertainer boosted by its unusual plot and Rajkummar Rao’s thoroughly enjoyable performance, despite a weaker second half.

Nandini Ramnath of Scroll.in observed that the film’s crisp premise is overstretched but the buffoonery is consistent — noting how cops investigate missing toasters and broken flowerpots while bland-looking apartments turn out to be vice dens.

Rahul Desai of The Hollywood Reporter India called it simply a “Hindi movie with a sense of humour” — and in today’s OTT landscape, that alone is worth celebrating.

The one outlier was Hardika Gupta of NDTV, who gave it just 1 out of 5, stating it had all the right ingredients but forgot the recipe. Dark comedies do tend to divide rooms.

Why Does Farah Khan’s Cameo Mean More Than It Seems?

Farah Khan is not someone who shows up in films out of obligation. She is fiercely selective about where she lends her name and energy — and when she does step in front of the camera, there is always a reason.

In this case, that reason is clear: Rajkummar Rao and Patralekhaa. Their friendship, their credibility, and the kind of project they chose to back with their very first production — one that is offbeat, comic, grounded, and deeply human — was reason enough.

It is also worth noting that most of the cast members had previously worked with each other in various films, with the exception of Farah Khan — making her presence in the Toaster ensemble something genuinely new. She was not a repeat collaborator being called back in. She was someone who looked at what Raj and Patralekhaa were building, and chose to be part of it from scratch. That is a different kind of endorsement entirely.

Where Can You Watch Toaster Right Now?

Toaster is currently streaming on Netflix India, where it arrived on April 15, 2026 — coinciding with the celebrations of Poila Baisakh and Vishu. It runs at a tight 2 hours and 6 minutes — the ideal length for a black comedy that keeps its premise moving without overstaying its welcome.

If you enjoy dark comedies built on absurd premises — in the vein of Andhadhun, Ludo, or Monica, O My DarlingToaster is right up your alley. And if you want to see what Farah Khan looks like inside a murder mystery about a kitchen appliance — well, there is only one place to find out.
